Чолӧм да видза кора! Hello and welcome! I’m Maria Fedina and I’m a human geographer, social anthropologist, and a PhD researcher.
I am a PhD researcher at the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian, and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Helsinki. My own research is about experiences of urban-dwelling Indigenous peoples and meanings of Indigeneity in Russia. I also participate in a group research project on biocultural heritage and non-linear time with my colleagues from Indigenous studies at my home university.
I received my Master of Social Sciences degree from the University of Eastern Finland in 2017. There I studied Human Geography. The same year I received another Master’s degree from the Kutafin Moscow State Law University. There I studied Criminal Law.
After graduation, I took a 3-year break from academia and worked in different positions in the private sector. I returned to academia in late 2020 (best timing ever!) when I was accepted as a PhD researcher at the University of Helsinki.
I was born in the Komi Republic, Russia. Now I live in green and beautiful Helsinki, Finland.
My recent hobby is film photography. All photos you can see on this website are taken by me.
